Essential skills for vets in ambulatory practice seeing foal cases will be covered. The morning starts with short lectures. After the coffee break we move onto the hands-on sessions and case based discussions will include over-the-wire catheter placement, CPR, foal squeeze- when and how and management flexural deformities in the field.

 Learning Outcomes

• Develop the knowledge, skills and techniques to logically diagnose, manage and treat common problems of foals in ambulatory practice
• Develop the knowledge and skills to apply sustaninable parasite control in youngstock in practice  
• Develop the ability to identify and manage congenital limb deformities

Lectures:

• The rational use of systemic antimicrobials in foals 
• Assessment and stabilisation of the neonate in the field
• Sedation and analgesia of foals 
• Sustainable parasite control in foals and youngstock in practice

Practical Sessions:

• “Vera Vein” - over-the-wire catheter placement
• Foal Squeeze
• Foal CPR
• Casting and Bandaging limb deformities
• Assessment and management of angular and flexural limb deformities  

Case-based Discussions:

• Fluid Therapy/electrolytes and acid-base monitoring in practice
• Parasite control- applying current best practice on the stud farm
• Thoracic and abdominal ultrasound
•  Hernias- which ones to treat and how
